Meet the Department
Nate Widell
Public Works Director
I was born in SE Minnesota but moved to Howard County at a young age and have lived here pretty much ever since. I like everything that the small town communities have to offer in Howard County with knowing my neighbors and the people of the community which is a big part of the reason I want to raise my family here. I like all the outdoor activities to do in Northeast Iowa whether it be golfing in the summer or riding snowmobile in the winter. I enjoy being a volunteer fire fighter and serving the communities in that duty as well.
I started working for the City of Cresco in January of 2019 at the Street Department. I have a background in farming which made my transition very easy. In March of 2020, I was transferred out to the Wastewater Department due to unusual circumstances with Covid-19, that transfer allowed me to gain knowledge of another city department to which I am very thankful for.
That brings us to present day 2020 when an employee, the Public Works Director for the City of Cresco, decided to retire. I am now the current full-time Public Works Director for the City of Cresco as of December 2020 in my 2nd year of service to the City of Cresco.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! You need a building permit for erecting or altering buildings in town. This includes adding a shed, redoing a deck, adding a fence, and more. The permit is valid for 1 year. Applications for building & fence permits can be picked up at City Hall. Once they are completed, they must be reviewed by the Public Works Director for approval. Where work is started without obtaining a permit, the fees specified for such permit must be doubled. For more information, please contact City Hall at 563-547-3101.
